Talina, who hoped to work as a model to help her family, but was forced to prostitution; Fabia, a house servant in a rich family, beaten and forced to the most humiliating work; Yvo, who works day and night in a farm to pay off debts and support his family; Anna e Sofia, two sisters forced to prostitution to survive. These are the stories illustrated in cartoons and spread on the web-site of the Council of Europe in order to explain to the member states various forms of exploitation experienced by a human being. Talina, Fabia, Yvo, Anna and Sofia are invented names, but the stories are real and tell us about persons sold and treated as objects, stories that often, very often, are ignored by those thinking that slavery cannot exist any more. However, to the contrary, it exists and in the face of many people.
What is trafficking- Trafficking in human beings is the modern version of slavery. Persons born in countries with economic and political problems leave their homes in search of a better life for themselves and their families, but fall into a trap of torturers who treat them as objects selling and exploiting them, and putting them into the hell.
New slaves are victims of any form of exploitation: often in the sex industry, but also economically, for example in agricultural sector with hard working conditions for a pittance or no wages at all. One should not ignore domestic slavery where women working as servants in families are subjected to exhausting work and they are humiliated and beaten. Everyone, man, woman or child, can be a victim of trafficking.
Commitment of the Council of Europe- The fight against trafficking in human beings has become one of the priorities of the Council of Europe. Numerous activities have been undertaken at legal and political levels. One of the most recent is the adoption of the Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings.
And the stories in cartoons are one of the steps to introduce this subject and defeat slavery once and for all.
