The 12th of June is the World Day Against Child Labour . The last report of International Labour Organization (ILO) points out that in the world 218 million children and 126 million adolescents are obliged to work and reduced to slavery, and sometimes they are also victims of sexual exploitation. Asia is the country with the highest number of working children (122 million), whereas in Africa there are “only” 50 million.
Agriculture- This year the World Day Against Child Labour focuses on the elimination of child labour in agriculture. Worldwide, agriculture is the sector where the largest percentage of working children is found - nearly 70 %. Over 132 million children aged 5 to 14 years old often work from sun up to sun down on farms and plantations, planting and harvesting crops, spraying pesticides, and tending livestock. When children have to work long hours in the fields, their ability to attend school or skills training is limited, preventing them from gaining education that could help lift them out of poverty in the future. Moreover, agriculture is one of the three most dangerous occupations to work in along with mining and construction, in terms of fatalities, accidents and ill health.
The campaign- “STOP child labour – school is the best place to work” is a campaign run by the Alliance 2015 network of development organisations that seeks to eliminate all child labour through the provision of full-time, quality education. The campaign is based on education that is every child’s right. To end child labour worldwide, all children must be guaranteed a full time formal education. In fact every year that a child attends school reduces the chance that he will end up in economic servitude. The Alliance 2015 has rescued many children from slavery and labour giving them education.
World Day Against Child Labour in Rome- This year in Rome on the 12th of June, in FAO (Viale delle Terme di Caracalla) at 2.00 pm there will be a Meeting about child labour in agriculture in Italy.
