310 prisoners have signed a letter to the Italian Republic President to ask the right to die in spite of the life imprisonment. The initiative has been taken from a prisoner and then the others have signed to this request to not staying for their whole life in prison. For them it’s better to die.
“It seems a paradox, but it’s understandable” says Luigi Manconi from the Ministry of Justice and the senator Maria Luisa Boccia has in fact introduced a bill to abolish the life sentence in favour of a 30 years sentence. The life sentence, in her opinion, is a paradox because the Italian law decrees that jail would have the aim to reintegrate persons in society whereas persons who have received a life sentence would stay in prison for all the rest of their life.
Prisoners could also spend time in prison devoting all the time to study and to cultural and spiritual activities. For example prisoners from Rebibbia, “S.Anna”, Castelfranco Emilia, Castiglione delle Siviere have realized paintings, pictures and also video-installations which have been collected in a free art gallery in Modena, in San Paolo Church. The gallery has opened the last month untill the 17th of June and there will be also conferences, debates and other activities about the theme of prison and human rights.
Also in Bologna, on the 11th of June the "Garante"who protects the Rights for prisoners, will introduce a bill about imprisoned mother women and speak of the deliberation of €. 179.000,00 to realize projects for women in risk to be imprisoned.
