Two points and a site for Europe Direct Relay

A new information service on Europe –   Europe Direct Relay – has been presented by President of the Legislative Assembly Monica Donini, health and communication councillor of the municipality of Bologna Giuseppe Paruolo and  Director of the European Commission´s representation Roberto Santaniello on the occasion of the COM-PA – the European Exhibition of Public Communication – recently held in Bologna. The ED Relay aims at making citizens aware of and involving them in a bigger European network full of opportunities and resources. And it will do it with two points and… a site.

Relays in Europe- The Europe Direct network was launched by the European Commission in 2005 to systematise and simplify various information points having existed until then (Info Point Europa e Carrefours). Thus, the Europe Direct Relays were established to function as a preferential information channel between the European Commission and citizens of EU member states. The Relays not only inform and orientate towards activities, policies and programmes of the European Union, but also organise meetings, conferences to involve and make citizens aware of European topics. Now there are more than 400 Europe Direct Relays in Europe and about 40 of them are in Italy. In the region of Emilia-Romagna they are located in Bologna, Forli, Modena, Ravenna and Reggio Emilia.

Two points in Bologna-In 1999 the Legislative Assembly of the Emilia-Romagna Region opened to the public the European Documentation Centre (EDC, via Aldo Moro) as a specialised section of the   Library of the Legislative Assembly to deal with a number of citizens’ requests of information on European topics. With years the Centre developed editorial activities and school-oriented initiatives. In March 2007 the EDC accept a request of the European Commission and adopted the name of Europe Direct Relay of the Legislative Assembly of Emilia-Romagna integrating new activities provided by the Europe Direct network. Furthermore, the signing of an agreement between the Legislative Assembly and the municipality of Bologna led to the opening of one more Point of ED Relay at the Urp of the municipality of Bologna (Piazza Maggiore). So, the ex-Infopoint Europa of the municipality of Bologna includes activities of the Europe Direct network and succeeds to provide the whole range of services to citizens in collaboration with the ED Relay of the Legislative Assembly. Basic services, primary information and orientation answers are provided by the Relay Point of the municipality of Bologna and services of the second level dealing with complex and specialised requests – by the ED Relay of the Legislative Assembly.   

…and a site- In order to make known activities and services provided by the ED Relay of Bologna in web,  a site has been launched: an on-line space in 5 languages to be able to directly inform on opportunities and initiatives of the European network. Moreover, here, on the web portal “Pace e diritti umani”, a new section “I diritti umani e l’Europa”is open with articles on European Commission’s policies and projects in progress. European citizenship gives the opportunity to actively participate in the process of peace, to defend and support human rights.
