Often many children and teenagers are victims of bullying not only in schools but also out in the school bus.
So in Reggio Emilia Province thanks to the project “On board”, 150 children from primary and secondary school have been accompagnied to school in bus by 40 young volunteers.
The project has been promoted by Reggio children, the provincial administration and Asl (Health Care Local Administration), plus the collaboration of other associations of Reggio Emilia.
Paola Casali, counicilior of town of Bagnolo, explains that too often school bus are a good excuse for fighting. So the volunteers in this case have the aim of pacifying and calming pupils, and turn "enemies" into friends.
In fact the volunteers, who belong to the town´s associations, have been very helpful to the pupils from Bagnolo and Quattro Castella, who, thanks to them and this experience have understood the importance of being together in peace. Volunteers as feed back have had some discount for cinemas and swimming pool but moreover a satisfying experience.
However in general data are not encouraging. Indeed the Asl of Reggio Emilia, during the final seminar about “On board” project, has presented a research over the last year on 100 pupils of secondary school: 30% of boys and 40% of girls have been victims of bullying. Then 48% have seen other children involved in a fight whereas 26% have been personally involved.
To fight against the bullying the Reggio Emilia Province with the collaboration of the multiculturalism service centre “Prometeo” has organized training courses for teachers to prevent bullying at school.
