After the great success of the previous competition “The European Union and the Rights of the Child”, the Commission launches a competition open to all young people in EU titled “The European Union and non-discrimination”. European children and teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18 are invited to design a poster illustrating the non-discrimination in the EU. This competition has been launched on July 30th 2007, in the middle of the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All, by Franco Frattini, Vice-President of the European Commission with responsibility for justice, freedom and security.
The aim of the competition is to raise awareness among young Europeans of the work being done by the EU on the principle of non discrimination ratifies in the art.21 of the Fundamental Right Charter promoting and defending this principle through their own poster. Participants will be divided into two age categories (12-14 and 15-18) and must work in groups of at least four plus one adult who will be responsible for the team throughout the project, including travel to awards ceremonies. The registration form must be filled in on-line no later than Monday 24 September 2007. The poster and the accompanying submission form must be delivered in person to the offices of the national coordinator for logistics of their own country no later than Wednesday 31 October 2007.
The works that win the national prizes will be judged a second time by a jury made up of representatives from the European Commission and other people, such as a teacher, communications expert, graphic artist, illustrator, young person actively involved in a youth organisation, etc.The three winning teams in each age category, i.e. six teams in total, will then be invited for a trip to Brussels from Saturday 15 to Monday 17 December 2007 to discover all the city has to offer, including the European institutions, and to attend the awards ceremony chaired by Commissioner Franco Frattini, Vice-President of the European Commission. For each of these six teams, travel and accommodation will be provided for five members (four young people and one accompanying adult). The posters of the European winners may be used for future European anti-discrimination campaigns.
